if you'd like to read about our villages ad nauseam

jason, our cc, wrote these up, so be impressed that our chinese partners are practically better at english than i am... and speak chinese as well. :)

after we get a feel for your personalities at orientation, we'll split everyone up into groups. so unfortunately, i can't tell you where you'll be yet, but you can all rest assured that i'll be scrutinizing your every move at orientation. :) at least you'll know that if your team seems mad, there was method in the selection process and it wasn't just an arbitrary choice. in the meantime, you can pass this information on to your parents.

just another reminder before we leave -
print your teaching manuals! you don't need to do anything yet, but peruse it a little. play the games with people on the plane. just don't worry about making up specific lesson plans yet.

and without further adieu, our villages:

QuanFeng is located in Jing County, Xuancheng City, Anhui Province. It consists of three parts, namely Shang Hu(Upper Hu), Xia Hu(Lower Hu) and QuanFeng. Hu is a family name with the largest population in this area. QuanFeng is a very beautiful place, and the local people there are kind. Three streams run across the the village, there is also a reservior. It is very interesting to wash clothes in the streams and enjoy a rural life there in the hot summer. QuanFeng is famous for its bamboo products and spicy cuisines. Serveral buses are available to go to Jing County and Xuancheng City every day, so the transportation is very convenient. The local residents are very hospitable and give lots of support to our voluntary work. There are three small shops in the village, some common things are available with quite low prices. If something special is needed, you can discuss with the shopkeepers and they are glad to help.Last year we did our teaching work in QuanFeng Middle School. Students, who came from QuanFeng and other neighboring villages such as ZhaMen, MaoTian, were separated into different classes according to their grades or their English levels. In 2007, we had five classes in QuanFeng, one primary class for students in Grade 1-3, two secondary classes for students in Grade 4-6, one junior class for junior middle school students and one senior class for senior middle school students. Every class mentioned above was divided into class A and class B, class A started at 8:00am, ended at 9:30. After a 20-minute-break, class B started. This year, we will do our teaching work in QuanFeng Primary School.

(PS: We are going to Aimin Village this year actually, which belongs to Caicun. )The Cai Village in Dakang. The Cai Village located in a beauty spot called Moon Bay, which is 18 kilometers away from the Jing Town. Around the village, there are lofty mountains and peaceful rivers, which provide a good surrounding for the bamboo. As a result, the main income of the local people is from bamboo and tea. The transportation condition is acceptable in this area, where there are buses to the Jing Town. Until now, all of the eight bus routes are available, which helps the development of the local tourism, as well as the finance. The teaching team first arrived at center primary school in the Cai Village in 2007. This school has two teaching buildings, in which there are sustainable facilities and a teachers' room, where the volunteers can have a meeting or rest. Between the two classroom buildings, there is a big playground, where students could play games. In 2007, the students were divided into five classes, with a total number of more than 250, which suggests that there are enough students in this area. Most of the students came from the surrounding towns and villages, and some of them even took a long way from the cities. The volunteers lived in a village called the Wang village, which is about 20 minutes' bus ride and an hour's walk from the center school. The American volunteers lived with their partners in local people's houses. So the 12 in all volunteers were accepted by six families, all of whom were very hospitable. They prepared local dishes for the volunteers and took them to fish and some places of interest, which made the volunteers felt that they were part of the life there, not a guest or a visitor. They could even go to swim in the Moon Bay, where there enjoyed the cool water in the scorching summer days. The volunteers would never forget the interesting teaching experience and the cozy leisure time in the Cai village..

Xiyang Village is located in Langqiao Town, Jing County, Xuan City, Anhui Province. The villagers are divided into seven groups. Wooden-comb factories are the powerhouse of the local economy. Wood and bamboo are the two major economic resources. Xiyang Village is famous for its wooden combs, which are very popular around the country. Volunteers who had been to Xiyang Village always bought some wooden combs as gifts for their relatives. We will teach in Xiyang Middle School. The school is poor-conditioned. There are only a few simple classrooms. Students have to bring their own desks and chairs from home to the classrooms. The students enrolled in the school are mainly from Xiyang Village and the neighboring Xitou Village. Two years ago, the teachers of Xiyang Elementary School left school. As a result, the English classes had to be cancelled. The parents try their best to transfer their children to the schools in Jing County. That is why our volunteering in Xiyang Village is of tremendous help to local children, at least to the children who will be transferred to the schools in the county, because they will not lag too far behind from their future classmates in the county. In 2006 and 2007, the families near Xiyang Jiedao offered accommodation to all the volunteers. Xiyang Jiedao is the center of Xiyang Village, and the living conditions of the families there are better than other families. The transportation is convenient. There is a high way leading to the county. It takes you 20 minutes to school on foot, and a few minutes by bus. However, there are only a few buses every day. Basic daily necessities are available in the shops on either side of the road. Public telephone service is also available. The local villagers, especially the host families, show great hospitality and strong support to us volunteers. The natural environment of Xiyang is very good. There is a river flowing across the village, and on the river banks stand the mountains. All the villagers live in the mountains. The volunteers will have a colorful extracurricular time. We can go around, exploring nature with our students or the host families. We can also swim in the river, and enjoy many another activities beyond your imagination.

Zhangjin is a new teaching spot in 2008, which located in the Zhangjin Village of city of Xuanzhou district, Xuancheng City. Traffic is very convenient there. It's only a few kilometers away from Xuancheng City to Zhangjin Village. There's nonstop bus arriving at the place near Zhangjin Primary School. Students in this School are mainly from Zhangjin Village and the neighboring villages. The condition of the school is relatively good. There is a playground and some simple sports equipment, and there are even a few computers for students learning computer classes. However, the qualified condition of teachers relatively drops behind. This condition is even worse for English teachers. The English teachers there are all transferred from other teachers. Their schoolmaster Yuan is in support of the LE project very much. He warmly welcomes the volunteers to teach there, and he will make the greatest efforts to assist the development of the project. There are two groups of villagers around the school which are similar to those in the other three teaching spots. The farmers we visited are very warm, and the surrounding environment is very good. With green hills and clean rivers, the school is next to a cluster of bamboos. Near the school, there is a National Nature Reserve of Alligator sinensis, which is also breeding research center of Alligator sinensis.
