张锦 Zhangjin Village

郭红斌 Jason
Jason is a second year masters student studying International Economics and Trade at Nanjing University. Jason has been majoring in business for 5 years, and he is also interested in geography and history. He comes from a small village in southern Jiangxi, where the Red Army started their Long March in 1934. Though Jason has no experience abroad, he is sociable and has some foreign friends. Jason’s hobbies include badminton, volleyball, table tennis and other outdoor activities. Jason volunteered with LE China last year and had a great time. He loved the kids and became close friends with his fellow volunteers. He is very excited to be a Country Coordinator this year.
As a country coordinator, Jason helps select the villages that will host volunteers this summer, works with Chinese partners at Nanjing University and builds the relationships that are essential to the success of the LE China program.

张浩 Yogurt
Yogurt (whose Chinese name is Zhang Hao), is a second year masters student majoring in Management and Engineering in Nanjing University. She comes from northeast of China, where the winter is extremely cold. Yogurt is an energetic and outgoing girl, particularly fond of jogging and swimming. She hopes to make more friends through the program this summer. She is deeply attached to rural China because she grew up in a city, and is eager to live a different life. Last summer, Yogurt volunteered with LE China in Quanfeng, a small village in Anhui. Her experience there made a deep impression on her. She is looking forward to returning to the village and continuing to work with LE China.
As a country coordinator, Yogurt helps select the villages that will host volunteers this summer, works with Chinese partners at Nanjing University and builds the relationships that are essential to the success of the LE China program.

蒲振东 Jake
Jake (Pu Zhendong), currently an English major at Nanjing Universty, is about to turn into a senior after this summer and is going to pursue a master’s degree in journalism at the same university. Three years of English studies have endowed him with not only adequate proficiency of this language but also the corresponding skills on cross-cultural communication. Jake was born in Shangdong province of North China and is going to be 22 this August. In previous summer, he participated in a similar volunteer teaching program organized by their English Department to help kids in rural areas learn English, so he definitely have some experience in teaching. This year, he is honored to be admitted to the LE program and is looking forward to cooperate well with American partners and make more friends. Jake possesses an agreeable personality, always ready to give a hand to people in trouble. He enjoys food, jogging and movies in his spare time, also a big fan of tennis and soccer.

In previous summers, sheused to participate in many social practice activities and have some experiences on various internships. She is also an avid volunteer in an aiding center of our university, responsible for providing the social vulnerable groups with legal support. What she thinks of this project is considering the education in rural areas of China has comparatively been lagging behind, it is our obligation that we take some actions to help children there. 爱民Aimin Village

郝文龙Alick
This is a brief introduction of Hao Wen-long whose English name is Alick. He is a grade one master student in Business School of Nanjing University. His major is political economics. He has been involved in LEChina2008 Project Group in this March. In past three months, the group not only prepared all works including planning, recruiting, and training for LEChina but also participated in Google Commonweal Competition. Fortunately, Learning Enterprise succeeded at last from 1249 competitors. So, I think he has a clear mind to LE now. And he will be a team leader in CaiCun village, Xuan City, Anhui province.

He has been a volunteer teacher twice in some poor villages in northwest of China. He loves this job because he was a boy who grew up in a poor village and had been ever helped a lot by such volunteer teachers. Alick is good at getting along with children. That is to say, he loves every child and has patient to everyone. So Alick is a popular guy among them. Also because of such experience he knows what the children really want. We believe he will be a good teacher in this summer.

His character is forthright, honest and easygoing. He likes to speak out what he thinks straightly but does not like to hide many thinking in his mind. He cares about every member’s feeling in his group and makes the whole team like a family. So I think working with him will be a happy thing. In his spare time, he loves reading and doing some sports such as running, playing tennis and badminton. He likes make friends with all the volunteers who have the same hobby and dream with him.At last, according to his request, he welcomes all of you to visit his hometown Xian which is a historical city. He is willing to be a guide.

唐晓丹Heidi
Tangxiaodan, you can call her Heidi in English if you wish, aged 22, from Nanchang, Jianxi. Currently, she is in her first year of graduate study in Nanjing University, majoring in economics.
Heidi impresses me with her extroversion and fluent social skills. She is that kind of person with whom you want to make friend. Heidi likes parties. And she is always the most talkative and energetic one. She just hates solitude. She is inclined to evade the situation of being alone. And of course, she’s got serenity in her. If she bums into a book of her type, she will spend days and nights in reading it until finishes it. However, she is always apt to lose patience with textbooks.
Heidi has many hobbies of artistic and sports nature, for instance, playing piano, singing, and playing volleyball and basketball. Taking photographs is another hobby. When she gets leisure time, she fetches her camera and just wanders about to snap just everything intriguing. As a friend, I’ve already appreciated some her semi-professional works.

Heidi always says—“Just do it”! She likes trying new things and does not give a damn to the results. Although she had not touched volleyball for a long time, to everyone’s surprise, she actually signed up for volleyball team. And the team finally won the champion. Although her hand was injured in training and she lost the chance to win the final, to her, she enjoyed the pleasure of the game and that is adequate for her.

周晓斌Zhou Xiaobin
His name is Zhou Xiaobin. As a fresh man who came from Jiangsu province, china, he entered the intensive instruction of Nanjing University. He received his bachelor of science after four years of undergraduate course in the Kuang Yaming institution, which is another name of the intensive instruction in after years. During his regular college course, he had learned lots of physics, biology, mathematic and chemistry. But among these, he is interested in biology in particular. Now as a first year master major in biochemistry and bio-molecular biology at Nanjing University, he joined us in this project named LEchina.

He comes from a peasant family and was the only child. While studying hard in college, he attended some societies and joined the student union of the intensive instruction. Vigorous and impassioned, he became administer of the department of Propaganda in the student union in grade two, while he was a staff member before. He is good at painting, and crazy about it. Now he is the Moderator of the painting board of Nanjing University forum: lilybbs.net. Apart from his paint talent, he was also capable of organize human resources and made decisions under different conditions. He always remains cool when under stress.
In his spare time, he love playing badminton and doing exercises. Recently he is learning swimming, but has only mastered the backstroke. Also, he has a tablet and spends some time practicing his digital painting in his computer. Generally speaking, as a friend of him, I think him stable, sincere and accommodating, very easy to get along with.

王薇 Wangwei
Here is a brief introduction of Miss Wang Wei, a 2008 volunteer in LEchina program. We consider Miss Wang a right person in this program for the following reasons:Firstly, Miss Wang possesses a very good personality which makes her an easy-going person and popular with her friends and classmates. She has a tender and considerate heart to everything around her; that is to say, she cares about how people feel and what people need. As a result, students enjoy working with her because she makes the team like a family. At the same time, she is also conformed to principals and disciplines. She insists on merits like integrity and honesty. If there was something contradicts these basic values, she would strongly argue against it. In a word, she is a kind and honest person who loves children very much.

Secondly, Miss Wang owns a rich amount of experience with foreigners. In May, 2008, She worked as a language partner of some students from the Northeast University, USA, in which, she taught them Chinese and took them to have internships in NGO, foreign trade company, school and so on. Before that, she has participated in several lectures, saloon, and dinner parties, in which she communicated with volunteers most of whom are business people from the US through an organization called global involvement of education(Global IE). In 2007, she even worked as assistant manager for an Egyptian boss. All of this experience suggests that she has acquired a high English level and is able to communicate with English speakers fluently and freely, which is very important for an international activity.

Finally, Miss Wang has been worked as a tutor of a senior student for more than half a year. She is really patient and good at teaching. Her student has made great improvement under her guidance. Moreover, they became very good friends and the student sincerely hopes she could work as her tutor in the next year. As a result, we firmly believe that she could be a good teacher for the students in Anhui province.

伏晓丽 Ivy
Ivy is a tall girl with long hair. She's a first year graduate student at Nanjing University. Her hometown is Lianyungang City by Yellow Sea, which is beautiful and famous for its seafood.Ivy says that she loves green and red best, for they are the symbol of life and passion. So it is not surprisingly to see her always wearing either of the two colors.Ivy likes playing badminton and thinks herself as a good player. And recently she's stuck on Snooker after watching a game which involved the most famous players like Murphy and Selby on the spot. She thinks that it's a sport of gentlemen. It is also said that she used to be a football player. However, it was about 12 years ago, when she was a primary school girl.
Ivy tried to learn playing piano for about 2 semesters. She enjoyed the time spent at the piano room. Though, it was a pity that she didn't have a lot of time to practice and she can now just play very simple melody. Given the time, Ivy said, she would practice and practice and become a good player. Ivy also reads. Her favorite book is Gone With The Wind. What attracts her most is the toughness and charm of the heroine Scarlett. The words "tomorrow is another day" always inspire her. Ivy participates in many activities intended to help children with hearing or learning disabilities. She has a dream that those disabled kids will share equal opportunities with sane kids. There's still a lot more you should know about Ivy. Make friends with her and you will find she deserves your friendship.

Li Tiantong’s English name is Jack. He is a 2nd year post-graduate students majoring in botany. However, he knows nothing in plants because his mentor’s research is mainly concerned with amino acids. By the program, she hopes to help the rural children to realize the importance of study, especially the English study and to cultivate their interest of study. During Daisy’s childhood, she used to go back to her hometown with her grandparents in her holidays. So we can believe that she could get used to rural life very easily. 西阳Xiyang Village

王佳Allen Wang
Allen is a senor student of the School of Foreign Language Study. He is from Shanghai, which is a shining metropolis near Nanjing. As far as I know, people from Shanghai are always versatile; they are always considerate and put themselves into other one’s shoes; they are fond of many kinds of activities, and they behave gracefully, and I think when you meet Allen, you will find he is such a great example. He used to be a member of drama club and played the role, Macbeth. What is more, he participated in Chinese University Student Shakespeare Festival and won the title of “Outstanding Actor.”He also enjoyed intercultural exchange very much. Last year he joined a summer camp held in Taiwan, and made friends with the students from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Allen joined the Students’ Union of the School of Foreign Language Study. Allen likes sports very much, and is very good at soccer and swimming. I thought maybe because he likes doing exercises, he needs more calories than others. Because Allen has a great appetite, he likes cooking. Ok, I have talked too much. In a word, he is a great guy, and I hope you feel the same way. Love you ~Love LE ~Love China~

程棵Wilson Cheng
Wilson Cheng is a Nanjing local. He is a senor student, and majors in mathematics. He will go on his graduate education in the Academy of Science and Technology, majoring in management science. As a mathematics student, his way of thinking is brief but effective, clear and precise. Physically he is a big guy and good-tempered. He is easygoing and scarcely gets angry. He is always ready to help others. He even complains about the fact that because he never say no to others people’s requests for help, he has not his own schedule.
Wilson likes reading very much, and prefers a peaceful environment so that he can think. He has a fairly wide range of categories he is interested in, from ancient poems to biographies. He loves history books, especially the ones on foreign history. He also likes making friends and exchanging ideas with others. He enjoys go hiking very much. Wilson is a student full of curiosity. That is why he likes learning new things very much. For example, he once learned German as well as French. He is also quite persistent to his own goal no matter how hard it would be to realize it.

彭婙Sissi Peng
Peng Zheng is a very lovely girl who is quite extravert but sometimes very quiet. Her English name is Sissi which is from a German story. She is a MA candidate in her first year studying journalism. She likes children but fears dogs so it must be an exciting experience to do volunteering in the countryside. She is fond of jogging, hiking and reading, especially reading books on history as well as biographies. She has a strong sense of direction and seldom gets lost. She used to like watching Korean TV plays. She took part in the debating contest and began to learn to play the piano several years ago. When she was a young girl, she wanted to work as a journalist. However, she has realized that it is very hard to be a qualified journalist these days. She appreciates the fact that she is very easygoing but is not satisfied with her immaturity. She said that her character is like the water flowing from the bottle in the winter because her sign of the zodiac is Aquarium.

王思鈺Alice Wang
Elise Wangis a so lively girl that I could't help borrowing some Groove Coverage 's lyrics to describe her.
So who is she?
There she is.
She hangs out every day around the Campus Havin'a smile playing game.
She looks so cute when she's doing foolish things.
Nobody ever puts blame on her hand.

if you'd like to read about our villages ad nauseam

jason, our cc, wrote these up, so be impressed that our chinese partners are practically better at english than i am... and speak chinese as well. :)

after we get a feel for your personalities at orientation, we'll split everyone up into groups. so unfortunately, i can't tell you where you'll be yet, but you can all rest assured that i'll be scrutinizing your every move at orientation. :) at least you'll know that if your team seems mad, there was method in the selection process and it wasn't just an arbitrary choice. in the meantime, you can pass this information on to your parents.

just another reminder before we leave -
print your teaching manuals! you don't need to do anything yet, but peruse it a little. play the games with people on the plane. just don't worry about making up specific lesson plans yet.

and without further adieu, our villages:

QuanFeng is located in Jing County, Xuancheng City, Anhui Province. It consists of three parts, namely Shang Hu(Upper Hu), Xia Hu(Lower Hu) and QuanFeng. Hu is a family name with the largest population in this area. QuanFeng is a very beautiful place, and the local people there are kind. Three streams run across the the village, there is also a reservior. It is very interesting to wash clothes in the streams and enjoy a rural life there in the hot summer. QuanFeng is famous for its bamboo products and spicy cuisines. Serveral buses are available to go to Jing County and Xuancheng City every day, so the transportation is very convenient. The local residents are very hospitable and give lots of support to our voluntary work. There are three small shops in the village, some common things are available with quite low prices. If something special is needed, you can discuss with the shopkeepers and they are glad to help.Last year we did our teaching work in QuanFeng Middle School. Students, who came from QuanFeng and other neighboring villages such as ZhaMen, MaoTian, were separated into different classes according to their grades or their English levels. In 2007, we had five classes in QuanFeng, one primary class for students in Grade 1-3, two secondary classes for students in Grade 4-6, one junior class for junior middle school students and one senior class for senior middle school students. Every class mentioned above was divided into class A and class B, class A started at 8:00am, ended at 9:30. After a 20-minute-break, class B started. This year, we will do our teaching work in QuanFeng Primary School.

(PS: We are going to Aimin Village this year actually, which belongs to Caicun. )The Cai Village in Dakang. The Cai Village located in a beauty spot called Moon Bay, which is 18 kilometers away from the Jing Town. Around the village, there are lofty mountains and peaceful rivers, which provide a good surrounding for the bamboo. As a result, the main income of the local people is from bamboo and tea. The transportation condition is acceptable in this area, where there are buses to the Jing Town. Until now, all of the eight bus routes are available, which helps the development of the local tourism, as well as the finance. The teaching team first arrived at center primary school in the Cai Village in 2007. This school has two teaching buildings, in which there are sustainable facilities and a teachers' room, where the volunteers can have a meeting or rest. Between the two classroom buildings, there is a big playground, where students could play games. In 2007, the students were divided into five classes, with a total number of more than 250, which suggests that there are enough students in this area. Most of the students came from the surrounding towns and villages, and some of them even took a long way from the cities. The volunteers lived in a village called the Wang village, which is about 20 minutes' bus ride and an hour's walk from the center school. The American volunteers lived with their partners in local people's houses. So the 12 in all volunteers were accepted by six families, all of whom were very hospitable. They prepared local dishes for the volunteers and took them to fish and some places of interest, which made the volunteers felt that they were part of the life there, not a guest or a visitor. They could even go to swim in the Moon Bay, where there enjoyed the cool water in the scorching summer days. The volunteers would never forget the interesting teaching experience and the cozy leisure time in the Cai village..

Xiyang Village is located in Langqiao Town, Jing County, Xuan City, Anhui Province. The villagers are divided into seven groups. Wooden-comb factories are the powerhouse of the local economy. Wood and bamboo are the two major economic resources. Xiyang Village is famous for its wooden combs, which are very popular around the country. Volunteers who had been to Xiyang Village always bought some wooden combs as gifts for their relatives. We will teach in Xiyang Middle School. The school is poor-conditioned. There are only a few simple classrooms. Students have to bring their own desks and chairs from home to the classrooms. The students enrolled in the school are mainly from Xiyang Village and the neighboring Xitou Village. Two years ago, the teachers of Xiyang Elementary School left school. As a result, the English classes had to be cancelled. The parents try their best to transfer their children to the schools in Jing County. That is why our volunteering in Xiyang Village is of tremendous help to local children, at least to the children who will be transferred to the schools in the county, because they will not lag too far behind from their future classmates in the county. In 2006 and 2007, the families near Xiyang Jiedao offered accommodation to all the volunteers. Xiyang Jiedao is the center of Xiyang Village, and the living conditions of the families there are better than other families. The transportation is convenient. There is a high way leading to the county. It takes you 20 minutes to school on foot, and a few minutes by bus. However, there are only a few buses every day. Basic daily necessities are available in the shops on either side of the road. Public telephone service is also available. The local villagers, especially the host families, show great hospitality and strong support to us volunteers. The natural environment of Xiyang is very good. There is a river flowing across the village, and on the river banks stand the mountains. All the villagers live in the mountains. The volunteers will have a colorful extracurricular time. We can go around, exploring nature with our students or the host families. We can also swim in the river, and enjoy many another activities beyond your imagination.

Zhangjin is a new teaching spot in 2008, which located in the Zhangjin Village of city of Xuanzhou district, Xuancheng City. Traffic is very convenient there. It's only a few kilometers away from Xuancheng City to Zhangjin Village. There's nonstop bus arriving at the place near Zhangjin Primary School. Students in this School are mainly from Zhangjin Village and the neighboring villages. The condition of the school is relatively good. There is a playground and some simple sports equipment, and there are even a few computers for students learning computer classes. However, the qualified condition of teachers relatively drops behind. This condition is even worse for English teachers. The English teachers there are all transferred from other teachers. Their schoolmaster Yuan is in support of the LE project very much. He warmly welcomes the volunteers to teach there, and he will make the greatest efforts to assist the development of the project. There are two groups of villagers around the school which are similar to those in the other three teaching spots. The farmers we visited are very warm, and the surrounding environment is very good. With green hills and clean rivers, the school is next to a cluster of bamboos. Near the school, there is a National Nature Reserve of Alligator sinensis, which is also breeding research center of Alligator sinensis.

girls, don't forget your toiletries!
if you need me in these next few days, just hit up my cell phone! 714.213.2857. i'm sure you all know by now, but i'm so excited to meet you all :)

Natalie Lynch

Natalie Lynch

Natalie, a light brown haired, blue-eyed bundle of energy is a soon-to-be junior at Stanford University. Originally from Arlington, Virginia, and like any good southern girl, she has managed to bring her roots with her to Northern California and plays in the university’s marching band. While her love of music is evident by her varied tastes-from indie groups such as Flight of the Concords and Death Cab for Cutie to classic rock such as the likes of Guns N’ Roses and AC/DC-her true love lies in costuming. Whether it is sumo wrestler suits, wigs and large glasses, drastic make-up, or even the dashing Stanford red marching band suits, Natalie never passes an opportunity to dress for the occasion…whatever it may be. On a more serious note, she draws much inspiration from the wise musings of those colorful characters of The Office.

Misha Ross

Misha Ross

"Misha Ross is perhaps one of the most highly guarded secrets of the
United States military. Beyond that, I am not at liberty to say more."
-General Michael V. Hayden, Director of CIA

"Yeah, yeah I worked with her on a lot of cases. She's got mad
talent-people say I'm like a male version of Misha Ross."
-Jack Bauer

"What? SHE'S HERE? Oh no, please don't make her come in, I'll do
anything you want! Please! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!"
-Chuck Norris

Batman. Superman. Wonderwoman. Ironman. The Incredible Hulk. Sure, they're pretty cool. But on November 11, 1987, a meteor crashed into Earth, revealing nothing more than a baby in a basket in the center of a 7 mile diameter crater. A nearby family took pity on the baby and
welcomed her into their home, knowing someday, she would need to know the truth about her past...

Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Misha Ross knew nothing of her past nor what lay in store for her. But from the beginning, she knew she was different from other children. While her classmates were picking their noses and playing tag, Misha was becoming fluent in French, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Mayan, Mandarin, Gibberish, and a recently discovered alien language known to the CIA simply as "gooferschniyzle". After graduating from high school, Misha planned to attend the University of New Mexico. It was then that she was approached by a secret society of superheroes known as "Team Awesome". There, she learned of her strange arrival to Earth and began an intense training program where she learned the art of arguing
effectively in a large group setting and how to act as a governing body of a country. Oh yeah, she also underwent the most intensive military training program known in the history of the United States. With her new-found knowledge, Misha attended the University of New
Mexico and currently poses as a rising senior majoring in International Relations and a member of the UNM Model United Nations team. Speculation indicates that Misha is periodically contacted by "Team Awesome" and sent on missions to save the world while posing as a tourist, as indicated by her Facebook pictures from her trips to Ireland, Paris, Mexico, Amsterdam, and other places.

In fact, most of the world's mysteries are somehow connected with this remarkable young woman. The Bermuda Triangle? Misha Ross. The Dead Sea Scrolls? Misha Ross. The Da Vinci Code? Actually, this one was partly Misha, partly Ironman. But we don't need to go into details. And this summer, ladies and gentlemen, Misha will be in Anhui, China with Learning
Enterprises. But whether her activities are limited to teaching English in rural China or not is classified information.

Megan Fries

Megan Fries

Megan Fries is a rising senior at North Carolina State University. Majoring in international studies and sociology and minoring in Spanish, she's originally from Connecticut and went south for college to escape the snow. Megan is a true animal lover. She has three cats: Samantha, Abby, and Smokey, and one hamster who loves Houdini. People don't have to worry about the safety of the hamster, who's now living with Megan's parents and hopefully as far away from the cats as possible. The top 2 things she misses about the US are cheddar cheese and real diet coke, which have been frequent visitors to Megan's taste buds since she's five.
